On the occasion of International Day for Persons with Disability (IDPD) this year, Shishu Sarothi had an array of activities.
On 3rd December, in the morning, our students participated along with other young students of partner SSA schools, to celebrate the theme of “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”. Together children and with and without disabilities along with staff members sang, danced and performed – children from the SSA school also put up a skit about ‘inclusion’ – much to the delight of the audience. The Chief Guest for the program was the Inspector of Schools, Ms Buli Gogoi.
Meanwhile, some children from our Centre participated in an Art competition organized by the Social Welfare Department at Kalakshetra. Later, another group of children did a group dance at the cultural program organized in the evening. Their delightful performance won the hearts of many of the dignitaries present at the function.
On the 4th December, we organized a Seminar on Rights of Persons with Disabilities for the Social Welfare Department and invited guests including persons with disabilities and DPOs. This seminar was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Social Welfare, Govt of Assam, Smt Pramila Rani Brahma. Sri Jishnu Baruah, Addnl Chief Secretary, Govt of Assam and Sri D Malakar, Director, Social Welfare Department were present and also spoke on the occasion. Presentations on the themes of Equality and the new RPwDAct 16, by our Disability Law Unit team, were followed by interactive discussions about implementation of the Act and other issues by persons with disabilities, DPOs other NGO members and officials of the Social Welfare Department.
